The Philippines is experiencing a significant shift in the way people work, with the rise of the gig economy.

This new way of earning a living offers flexibility and opportunities for workers, but it also comes with its own unique set of challenges.

At the recent GCreator Fest, organized by Globe Telecom, AltSwitch’s Chief Marketing Officer — Kaye Labay, took the stage to shed light on the Philippines Gig Economy. As one of the co-founders of AltSwitch and a digital marketing agency owner, she not only introduced her work but also dived into the critical challenges faced by gig workers and the imperative need for policies to protect their rights and interests.

The Gig Economy's Challenges

In today’s fast-paced world, the gig economy has been gaining momentum, offering an alternative to traditional employment. However, it’s not all sunshine and roses for gig workers. Kaye Labay highlighted three significant challenges they face:

1. Lack of Benefits: One of the most glaring issues in the gig economy is the absence of traditional employment benefits. Gig workers often find themselves without health insurance, paid leave, or retirement plans. This lack of safety nets can leave them vulnerable in times of need.

2. No Extra Compensation for Extra Efforts: Unlike traditional jobs where overtime or working during irregular hours often comes with extra pay, gig workers may not receive any additional compensation for their efforts. This can make it challenging for them to maintain a stable income.

3. Uncertainty About Income: Gig workers face income instability due to fluctuations in demand for their services. The ebb and flow of work can leave them unsure about their financial future, making budgeting and planning difficult.

Policies and Regulations

To address these challenges and protect the rights and interests of gig workers, Kaye Labay advocated for the implementation of key policies and regulations in the Philippines:

1. The Freelance Workers Protection Act: During her talk, Kaye mentioned that the Freelance Workers Protection Act has been passed in the Philippines. This legislation aims to safeguard the rights of freelance workers, offering them legal protection against unfair practices and ensuring they receive proper compensation for their work.

2. Education for Freelancers: Beyond regulations, Kaye stressed the importance of educating freelancers about their rights. Many gig workers may not be aware of the protections available to them under the law. Providing clear and accessible information can empower freelancers to assert their rights and demand fair treatment.

At the end of her talk, Kaye Labay shared a straightforward but important message: “Even though there are problems and difficulties, we now have more freedom.”

She also encouraged freelancers to keep an eye out for new innovative solutions like those offered by Altswitch, a blockchain startup with its decentalized product DeKaha that will empower freelancers to efficiently accept borderless payments from clients anywhere in the world.

As the gig economy continues to grow, initiatives like the Freelance Workers Protection Act and organizations like Altswitch play a vital role in shaping a more secure and equitable future for gig workers in the Philippines. It’s clear that this evolving work landscape demands careful attention and proactive measures to ensure the well-being and stability of those who contribute to it.

Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of blockchain and decentralized finance.
